Thank you to everyone who gave me portfolios, and congratulations on making it this far. I am now busy grading these portfolios. Grading will be completed by next Tuesday, but many portfolios are already done. You will be able to access your final grade online sometime next week, but if you would like you grade before then, feel free to email me to request that information; I will reply once I have finished grading your portfolio. Here are some more ways for you to earn make up hours for class. Read or view any of the following and write a one-paragraph response to it. You can respond to any or all of these, and each response will count as one hour of additional attendance. Email your response(s) to me by 8:00 pm today. I will reply to confirm receipt of your work later today or early tomorrow.

Weather Delay–Class Canceled, Lab To Be Held

Due to the weather-related delay this morning, all UNM classes that begin before 10:00 am are canceled; this means that both of y sections of ISE 100 are off this morning. but lab for both sections is still on, and lab attendance today will count for the 2.5 hours possible today.

If you are not able to make it to lab today, check here for options for making up hours. I will add a new option momentarily. If you are not sure how many hours you still need, please email me and I’ll get back to you later today.

Attendance Deadline

One of the requirements to be eligible to submit a portfolio and pass the class is to earn at least 65 hours of attendance and participation. If you need to make up hours, please have this done by the end of class on Tuesday, December 8.

Six Words to Make Up Hours

Another option to make up attendance hours is a writing exercise. Smith Mag, an online magazine for writers, has a project called Six Word Memoirs; the idea is to write a life story in exactly six words. You can do this to make up some hours. Go to the Six Word Memoir website and create a free account. Then post up to six separate six-word memoirs. Then email me with the link to your profile so I can read your work. You will earn one half-hour of attendance credit for each entry, up to three hours of attendance credit.

Week 15 Participation Credit

I read an article today about the new featured on the New York Times website called Time Skimmer, and I found this really interesting. And it got me thinking about how we consume news today. Watching a 30-minutes news broadcast or reading the daily newspaper is much less common–especially for college students–than reading news online. So I wonder to what extend the Times Skimmer is part of that. For this week’s participation credit, read the Read Write Web article and peruse the Times Skimmer. Then post a comment here explaining what you think. How does this align with how you access news? What kinds of sources do you go to for news?

I find the idea of e-books intriguing, but I’m not sure what students think of them. so I want you to read this article about a private school that replaced its library with digital books. As a college student, what do you think of this kind of experiment? Post a comment here with your thoughts, as well as your experiences (if any) with e-books.
